White sage is known for its cleansing power. The scent is penetrating and spicy. Some people have to get used to this. Sweetgrass, on the other hand, smells sweet, fresh and friendly. You could associate the scent with coffee or ice cream. You also come across Sweetgrass under the name “holy grass”.

The sweet scent of holy grass is an excellent addition to the pervasive smell of white sage. Both herbs are famous among the Indians because of their cleansing effect. Sweetgrass is a broad type of grass that is braided before adding to smudging herbs.

The nice thing about smudging is that you use the herbs in pure and dried form. You can use a smudging bowl or shell to burn them in. Put a few sprigs of holy grass and white sage on top and light them. Wait until they burn, and then blow out the flame.
