Choosing Crystals

When it comes to acquiring crystals, there are various avenues to explore such as physical stores, online shopping, markets, and trade fairs. While having knowledge about the specific properties of each crystal can be beneficial, it is not essential. What matters most is being open and receptive to a stone that resonates with you and holds significance. A helpful technique is to stand in front of a group of crystals, close your eyes, and let yourself be guided to the one that calls out to you. You can also run your hands over the crystals, noticing if any seem to have a subtle pull or energy that draws you in. It’s possible to end up choosing multiple crystals. Another popular approach is to research crystals based on what you want to heal or address, starting with the body part or chakra that requires extra attention.

The Seven Chakra Introduction Guide

  • First Chakra (perineum, base of spine): protection, safety and comfort in your environment
  • Second Chakra (low belly, sacrum): abundance, power, sexuality, courage
  • Third Chakra (waist, solar plexus, bottom of the ribcage): inner-child-awakening, spontaneity, fun, joy, the ego, the will
  • Fourth Chakra (heart, chest): love, self-love, acceptance, compassion for self and others
  • Fifth Chakra (throat): communication, self-trust, channelling divine information
  • Sixth Chakra (third eye, between the eyebrows): intuition, ability to meditate, mental purity and clarity
  • Seventh Chakra (top of the head): This is the accumulation of all the chakras and where we go up to contact the divine.

Buying from the Internet

When choosing a crystal from an internet site, it is impossible to touch it, so you need to take your intuition one stage further.

Browse through the pictures of the various crystals and note which section most appeals to you. Spend some time browsing through that section. You may find yourself excited by the concept of a particular crystal, with a powerful urge to touch and feel it and a sense of frustration that you cannot.

If you feel that you want that crystal to be a part of your life, it likely has something to offer you. For example, you may feel drawn to a rose quartz crystal because you need something in your life that can help you develop a love of yourself.

If nothing strongly appeals to you, accept that the time is not right and come back on another day when perhaps a crystal will plead with you, like a gorgeous puppy, to take it home.

Cleansing your crystals

There are several ways you can cleanse crystals when you get them, either before or after a healing session or if you are using your crystal for other means.

Citrine and Kyanite are the only two crystals that never need cleansing

Water

Wash crystals under a running tap. This works for most tumble stones except those fragile like selenite or metallic, but not for gems. Lapis Lazuli and turquoise can also be damaged by prolonged water contact. Leave crystals to dry naturally, or use a soft cloth only for your crystals.

Amethyst geodes

You only need a small amethyst geode, clusters of tiny amethysts embedded in a piece of rock. Stand individual crystals or point on the flat part of the geode. You can also make a circle of crystals around a large unpolished piece of amethyst.

The cleansing will take around 24 hours.

Mother Earth

You can bury crystals in the soil for 24 hours. This can be a good way of resting an overworked crystal and is especially good for crystal points. Choose an indoor or outdoor plant growing, such as lavender, rose, or sage herbs. Wipe clean when complete. Only place delicate crystals or gems on top of the soil in a small ceramic open dish.

Fragrance

This is suitable for any crystal or gem. Circle a sagebrush or cedar smudge stick, lemongrass, pine, juniper, frankincense, lavender or rose incense stick in an anti-clockwise spiral in the air over any crystals to be cleaned three or four times

Sound

Collect any crystals to be purified and ring either a handbell or Tibetan bells over the crystals nine times. You can also strike a small singing bowl over the crystals for a minute until the sound ceases. Repeat twice more. If you have been working with intense sorrow or healing, the sound is an excellent way to cleanse the crystal.

Light

Sunlight is the best cleanser for vibrant, richly coloured or sparkling crystals and gems like topaz or diamonds. Leave the crystals from the moment you wake up until noon the following day. If there is little sunshine, you can substitute a small gold-coloured or neutral beeswax candle for sunlight and leave your crystals around the candle.

Aventurine, amethyst, aquamarine, beryl, kunzite, citrine, sapphires, fluorite, rose quartz do not respond well to sunlight.

Rose quartz, moonstone, selenite, and amethyst are very responsive to lunar energies. The moon at night is the best way for cleansing. Leave your crystals out in a safe, sheltered, and protected place outside every month. They can be left indoors on a window ledge.

Salt

Salt is a natural abrasive and can harm your crystals. You can make clockwise circles of salt around the crystals. Leave the crystals for 12 hours.

Infusions

To make an infusion, add a teaspoon of dried hyssop or rosemary herb to a cup of boiling water, stir, cover, leave for 10 minutes, then strain.

Sprinkle the crystals with a few drops of hyssop or rosemary, sage or thyme infusion and wipe clean with a soft dry cloth.

Using Amethyst elixir: soak an amethyst in cold water, then remove.
